I do not like Peas. Not at all. My husband , on the other hand, loves peas and always wants me to cook them. I do, but as is the fate and many moms who are trying to appease the different taste buds in their households, I make two different veggies or try to find alternatives to his pea-based dishes.
But recently, I have been determined to try some of the dishes that I previously frowned upon. Much of this has been brought upon by my nee fondness of Beet Greens and Beet Juice. So, I decided to try my hand at Split Pea Soup.
The thing is that I have numerous reasons for not liking split pea soup- the texture, the color, the consistency, and the smell. Let’s not forget the fact that it was used as vomit in The Exorcist
. I have never had good homemade split pea soup and there is no restaurant of can that can make my mouth water. And yet, I was still determined to give it a try.
I found this recipe in the current issue of Food Network Magazine. It is made in a slow cooker, with a turkey leg, and topped with yogurt upon serving. However, I have never found recipe that did not benefit from a little tweaking and so I made some changes.
(1) Use Ham-hock instead of Turkey Leg
(2) Double everything except the water. Use as much water as your crock pot
holds. (We have a 6 or 7 qt)
(3) Soak Split-Peas overnight.
(4) Do NOT serve with yogurt.
It was amazing!

This is something I would LOVE! Then again there are very few foods I dislike
Looks so delicious!
How do you say?….yummy!!! Five thumps up for the split pea soup!…I want more!!!!!!!
I love pea soup and finally Kristina has found a recipe she likes too. And this soup is really tasty and comforting on a cold wintery day. Especially, along with a crusty bread.
