Making Homemade Ice Cream

by Kristina Brooke on July 29, 2011

It took 5 minutes. 8.5 minutes if you factor in prep time. Making homemade ice cream was the easiest thing I have ever done, and that is saying a lot considering I have also said that about my potato-leek soup. I admit this recipe is not mine- I found it via Pinterest and it lives here. But she admits that it’s not her recipe either. Nonetheless, it made for some fun today!

So what do you need?

  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (or any flavor you choose)
  • Ice
  • small zip-loc bag
  • Gallon ziploc bag

Mix sugar, vanilla, and half & half. Pour into smaller bag. Seal )if this is a problem for you as it is for me, have your child/spouse seal it because it will leak and get messy). In the larger bag add ice- about half full. Pour salt on ice. Put smaller bag inside (try to distribute the ice on either side of the smaller bag). Seal and shake. Shake. Shake. Shake. For 5 minutes, shake. I wanted mine a little more frozen so I shook for 7 minutes ( my ice cream took longer. Mya’s took 8.5 mins).

My Tips:

  • Have your children put on gloves (winter gloves) as it gets cold and they may have trouble shaking without them.
  • Be sure to was the smaller bag off thoroughly before opening and eating. You don’t want salty ice cream, unless you like it like that.
  • It melts pretty fast so make sure you have everything needed to eat right away. If not, you’ll be drinking your ice cream.
  • Try with different flavors- you may be the next Ben & Jerry!
